Today is Dedicated to Productivity

As I type this, I am waiting for a Sun server to boot into single-user mode from a CD-ROM so that I can confirm a boot disk upgrade is successful and then begin an upgrade of the operating system to Solaris 10.

Tonight, I am replacing an old Sun E5500 machine with a somewhat newer 280R, effectively migrating the apps & users of that machine from Solaris 8 to 10 in the process. I'm so looking forward to getting all 5000/5500 models out of my data center.

If the prior two paragraphs are utterly undecipherable to you, just have faith that this is the sort of routine thing I'm paid a princely sum to perform, and two of the few tasks in my regular duties which bring with them some sort of sense of accomplishment and closure. Suffice it to say that all is well in the world.

In related good news, these general tasks have large periods of waiting-for-steps-to-complete so I can also complete other smaller tasks. Multitasking is good.

With a little luck, I may even leave the office early today with minimal guilt since I'm telecommuting some extra hours this evening. No dancing, meetings or outside commitments ce soir.

Slightly newer 280R?

I'm so sorry for you.

We are looking to purchase as stack of T5140 machines --I'm knee-deep in performance testing a loaner right now-- but that would be first new purchase of equipment my division has made since 2006.

I gotta get a new job. Like, now.

Trashing old servers is fun!

I am in the process of decommissioning the last of three Sun Clusters each composed of two E4500's. The databases they used to run have been migrated to one or another Veritas cluster running on V490 hardware.

I'm also slowly but surely ditching a whole raft of E420R and Netra T1 105 boxes. All of these reached End of Service Life between the end of last year and this past June.

Whee! ;-)
