Thursday Improved

Whatever caused the dizziness afflicting me Thursday morning cleared within a few hours. While I spent the bulk of the daytime utterly drained of energy, I still slugged out most of the day at the office before leaving early.

A 1.5 hour power nap in the late afternoon did wonders.

We had a meeting of the 2009 IAGSDC committee 6-7:30 PM. We have 438 registrations and the hotel room block is half booked currently. For the most part, the meeting was just a reporting of minor issues which are in the process of being resolved. Of these, the biggest problem is getting sites booked for the fun badge tour: many organizations simply don't bother responding to telephone calls or submitted applications. We have three of five sites locked down; our coordinator is still drilling various offices for aye or nay on the other three. We do have a long list of backup sites proposed as well and there's still plenty of time to get this worked out. I think everyone --especially our FBT coordinator-- is amazed at how long it is taking to get even a rejection from any particular location.

Since I was still taking notes as the meeting secretary, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str started the regular club night with a Plus tip. I arrived just as he was starting the singing call. I picked up with alternating Advanced and Plus for the rest of the evening.

I've noted that the club has been rather weak on 'all four couple' and 'all eight' calls so I made sure there were at least 3-4 figures employing them in each set of the night, walking through a couple for clarity. I think it went well.

Abe went solo, calling a Plus tip in the middle of the night. I noticed him doing the same thing I did when I started: the early part of the tip starts fabulously and then becomes more hesitant towards the end as he tried to think of something novel or a different get-in for subsequent figures. I reassured him that's a normal part of development and offered a few ideas to keep in the back of one's head to draw upon when the well goes dry --heck, if all else fails, working lefty versions of the calls & figures used in the first part will make it all seem fresh again to the dancers.

[livejournal.com profile] kent4str is calling for DCLS at Hillwood on Saturday and we still have to arm-wrestle for the Chesapeake Squares Tuesday night gigs for the balance of the month. Woo hoo!

Be aware that with airlines not allowing reservations farther out than three to six months, we've held off making our DCDC hotel reservations until we can get some idea of air travel costs.

We're also trying to figure out how long we want to stay before and after. The unfortunate juxtapositioning of CALLERLAB next year makes this even more complex. Do I skip caller school? Do I skip CALLERLAB? Do I skip both and stay in DC for a longer time before or after the convention?

(Oh, www.dcdc2009.org doesn't say - what dates do the room block cover?)

In our contract with the Marriott Wardman Park, our room block runs April 5-13. Marriott will extend the room rates three days prior & following this block.

B and K, thanks a for wonderful club night. I thought it was more fun than usual and your calling was pretty smooth -ISH! ;)

To be serious - I really enjoyed your calling last night and the all-8 calls and lefties were much appreciated (especially the left sq chain through - it messes with my mind, but I surprise myself that I make it through.)

Brian, dear, are you SURE the power nap got you back to normal? Three + three = six, not five.

at least, here in the great white north

Two missing bits of information:
1. we're approaching far more sites than we can use because we expect rejections from most;
2. though we want only five for the tour, we also want a sixth as a backup in case of last-minute catastrophe or inclement weather.
