Today's Hard-Learned UNIX Lesson

If you place incredibly important data files in /tmp, don't be surprised when your data isn't there when you return two weeks later.

Thank you and good night.

Bitten by the job that cleans up /tmp or was this Solaris where /tmp is mounted on top of swap allowing your data to go "poof!" when you reboot?

The latter, and the servers has been through two reboot cycles since the data was placed there.

I have several users that insist on using "deleted items" in Outlook for storing all their emails. Even when they have lost stuff, they continue to do it.

Please tell me it wasn't you who had placed the incredibly important data files in /tmp.

Ack, never! If I have incredibly valuable data which would affect the well-being of the planet, I'd be sure to place it somewhere more secure, like /var/tmp. :-)

Don't laugh... I met someone a while ago who stored docs in the Recycle bin because she occasionally re-used them as templates for new documents. *sigh*

Everybody knows you should use /usr/tmp for permanent temporary stuff!

I had to explain this to an upper-management staffer just yesterday... Scary.
