Club Night Square Dancing

Being the 5th Thursday of the month, the DC Lambda Squares' club night was all A2 and C1 dancing. Many of our regulars are still in dance overdose from last weekend's IAGSDC convention so attendance was relatively light --2 squares for A2 and 1 for C1-- those of us who did come were a little brain-dead (more than usual).

[livejournal.com profile] justetthon gave me both an A2 and a C1 tip to call. My voice wasn't in the best of form thanks to some minor irritation but I think the tips went relatively well. The A2 floor was stumbling rather severely at first but sensing my material was more challenging than they wanted, I quickly flipped to lighter, mostly A1 cards. There were still hiccups but the squares' success rate rose sufficiently to keep their confidence while still giving them something to think about on the floor.

This was the first real-world test drive of my new laptop; all was successful on that front. I was surprised to see that my laptop model is practically a twin of [livejournal.com profile] justetthon's! Great minds think alike. :-)

I'm looking forward to writing a lot more A2 and C1 material this weekend at the trailer in preparation for future gigs.

Hey, I'm commenting to ask you if you'd be interested (or could coordinate) in bringing a small group of square dancers and a caller (with music) to the American Visionary Art Museum for our gala reception on (I need to double-check, as I've got a wrong date in my book, but I'm 99% certain this is correct) Saturday, June 16th. The museum is doing a sort of country/farm/cake themed event (don't ask), with Duff from Ace of Cakes as a sort of host-y/VIP-type and doing the place up country. We've got a band, but it's a pretty mainstream band and the event would really benefit from a little more interesting demo.

At our gala meeting this morning, I suggested we could see if one of the local gay square dancing groups might be interested in sending a little contingent to do a short demo for the event, and everyone was really excited at the prospect. It's a fundraising gala and we're short on cash for a proper honoraria, but we'd give tickets to ten (maybe more if I can work it out) people to attend, do a demonstration, and enjoy the meal and free booze and schmoozing potential there. The street price for tickets is $250 a head, so it'd be a chance for a bunch of y'all to get in for (almost) free and have a good time and give us a good time, too.

Drop me a line if you think that might be a possibility. You can email me at joe@sonascope.com, or give me a buzz at 301-910-5191, though I'll be in WV for a lot of the weekend and out of cell range, alas. Would love to make it work if we can. Hope to talk to you soon, Joe.

Ah, and P.S., I think it'd be a good opportunity for a little PR for whatever squares group is represented. I think there's going to be decent press coverage, and the Food Channel might be filming, as well.

I'm not directly in a position to be able to pull a square together for a performance, but I know folks who might. I've sent your text to the board of the Chesapeake Squares (http://www.chesapeakesquares.org/) to see if they're interested & available... if they've got the dancing bodies, I'd be happy to be their caller!
