Follow-up on Harley's death

After learning about Harley Walker's murder on Sunday (my LJ posting here), I've been watching for any further developments in the case. This is the latest I've heard.

The story says that if the suspect is convicted (of deliberately luring a man to a meeting with promises of sex, then murdering him and stealing his assets) he faces up to 25 years in prison.

25 years? For a foul deed like that? What happened to life imprisonment?

Like a lot of people we knew Harley a little - he was mentor to both me and Danny, about 10 years apart, when each of us came to Toronto. This whole thing has been very very sad. I wish the guy had just taken the money, that could at least be replaced.

I still can't get past people referring to Harley as "elderly" as if he was tottering about on a cane and had given up sex 20 yr ago. Neither was the case.

(staying in prison with no chance of parole for 25y IS "life imprisonment", and the standard sentence for murder here)
