Name Meme

My Monday has been rather boring thus far so to pass time, I present:

HowManyOfMe.com
LogoThere are:
155
people with my name
in the U.S.A.

How many have your name?

The info generator helpfully says there are another 1,105,275 people named Brian in the US, as well with 41,991 people named Jarvis. The former doesn't surprise me but I never would have guessed the latter.

Ah, but how many Canadians with your name in the U.S.A.?

It would be interesting to know. Come to think of it, I wonder how many Canadians are in the US currently...

A quick Google search comes up with 660,000 (University of Alberta study published in 2000) and 3 million (blurb for the book The Border Guide) on Amazon.ca. That number seems kind of high. It would mean that close to 10% of Canadian citizens live in the US.

There 156 people with my name in U.S.A.

There are only 62 other named like me.

I shall now kill them.

It's important to have a goal in life, something that makes it worth getting out of bed every morning. And chewing through the restraints.

I did a quick check to see if I could find something authoritative but didn't find anything which met that hurdle. I'm inclined to think the UofA number is closer to reality but that's purely anecdotal on my part.

My first name is the 24th most popular male name in the US.

My last name is not listed at all.

This is based on census data from the US 1990 report.
By that calculation, there should have been 4 people in the US with my last name.

There are only 19 with my full name and one famous with the last name.

This says there are only 2 people in the US with my name. I know of at least 3 (including me).

Interesting. It says there are 0 people in the US with my last name. I personally know 3, know of at least 4 others, and 411.com can find 39, not including me. I guess that isn't enough mass for their aggregator to pick it up. 'Ron' and 'Ronald', on the other hand, are about as common as 'Brian'.

I wonder how many *future* Canadians are in the US currently...!!

If you know what I mean.

the site has ground to a halt - too high bandwidth demands after being featured in memes, one suspects.

however, when you have a family name as unusual as mine, you tend to think you're the only one.

four or five years back, I did a search, and as near as I can tell, there are only two or three people with my last name with a listed phone in north america -- rich ambidge (the owner of ambidge.com at the time) and his wife, who in the san francisco bay area, and me in toronto. I've spoken to rich on the phone -- like me, he's from the UK; he comes from bedford, about 15mi from northampton, my family stomping grounds. (he travelled to california on a water polo scholarship of all things -- clearly HIS side of the family got all the athletic genes.)

given that scarcity, I'd not be surprised if "ambidge" falls completely below the radar of howmanyofme.com

however, there is one other person with my name - and I've met him, nearly 2y ago now. We must be related (3rd cousins once removed, I suspect). but then I suspect I'm related to any other Ambidge on the planet, much less anyone with my name exactly.
