Finally!
After much pain & trauma, I finally got my Linux box to talk nicely with Earthlink yet again.
Without prior notice, Earthlink switched their SMTP service to AUTH SMTP. This isn't a major issue and most mail clients can be converted with a couple of quick clicks. Sendmail, however, turned out to the a cast iron bitch. In the end, I upgraded Sendmail to the latest & greatest, updated the SASL application and spent most of the day debugging issues and exploring alternatives. It shouldn't have been this difficult, and perhaps it wouldn't have been if I was firing on all cylinders. Ah, well.
The spam filters are still off-line but I'll worry about that tomorrow. I'm going to sleep now.

I'm always amused when exciting news about how my hotmail account has just now been upgraded with New! Improved! features gets dumped into the spamtrap folder in the self-same hotmail account.
(oh well, the price is right)
