Visiting Portland, OR

[profile] kent4str and I will be flying out to Portland, OR, to visit his clan for a few days before heading to the IAGSDC convention in Anaheim on Sunday.  Anything/anyone in particular we should see in Portland?  Our plans are relatively unclear at the moment as we're at the mercy of his family...  :-)

My favorite sites in that area are about an hour or more due west -- Cannon Beach. Probably too far away for the family, but really lovely.

If you're actually in Portland, the Rose Gardens should be lovely this time of year. The big Rose Festival just finished.

Cannon Beach was going to be my suggestion too. A drive along the Columbia Gorge or Mt Hood is nice too.

Downtown....I think Powell Books is a fun hangout (it's been 5 years since my last visit...but I'm pretty sure it is still around). My mother is from Portland....so I've had quite a few visits over the years.

I recommend Old Wives' Tales for a nice meal. Despite the organic/vegan label, OWT has great food, and a wicked good soup bar. I never visit Portland without having at least one bowl of OWT's famous Hungarian Mushroom Soup:

And of course ... there's Powell's City Of Books, which is my favorite bookstore in North America. New and used titles are filed side by side, so it's easy to find stuff. If you've never been there ... the store takes up a full city block. And I'm not kidding. Heaven on earth for a voracious reader!
