Early Morning Mistakes

If I have any choice in it, I don't get out of bed before 11 AM on a weekend.  Alas, this morning was not one in which I could leisurely arise.

Next Thursday, we're flying to Portland, OR, to visit with [profile] kent4str's family before heading down to Anaheim, CA, for the annual IAGSDC convention and GCA caller school.  I'm still up to my eyeballs in work, especially since I was away from work almost all of this past week.  I don't really need a haircut at the moment, but I'd be looking pretty ugly by the time the middle of the convention rolled around in two weeks; because of scheduling, this morning is the only opportunity for me to get a haircut.

As luck would have it, I got the math-challenged barber at my regular barber shop.  Nice guy, but his english is sparse and his hearing isn't that great anyway --he's probably in his seventies.  Cutting my hair by half should take it to about 1 cm in length... there's a big difference between 1 cm and 3 mm.  Ah, well... it'll grow back eventually.

The worst part is that I tend to close my eyes and relax while the barber is clipping away; I find the sounds of the shop to be comforting, and the gentle trimming motions and occasional touches to slightly change the alignment of my head by the barber to be tremendously relaxing.  I generally zone out and enjoy the platonic sensuality of the experience.  Thus, I was caught totally off cuard when he began trimming my moustache.

In the first clip, he had already taken a chunk out of the left side so when I snapped back to attention, the damage  --IMHO-- was already done.  There was really no recourse but to let him continue trimming along to at least even out the structure & style.  Damn.

On the other hand, the new style actually goes better with my newly minted 3 mm hair so perhaps it was for the best.  And the moustache will grow back even faster than my hair:  I'll have it back to my preferred length in a week or so.

I'm sure you look lovely

I went to trim my beard last night...
trying out my dad's fancy new trimmer
it has one guard that is adjustable
yeah....you can guess
i had it set just fine..things were fine...went over my jaw and I guess I pushed too hard and the guard went blipblipblip right down to the shortest length...so...uh...yeah...Andy's sporting a nicely trimmed goatee again....

I did the same thing a few weeks ago: big swath of almost-shaved-off beard along my jawline. [rolls eyes] It grew in quickly.

[identity profile] bigfundrew.livejournal.com 2006-06-17 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah...me too..my beard grows so fast...and with my aversion to shaving...it'll be no time!! hehe

A few months ago, I removed the guard of my trimmer to clean it and then forgot to put it back before using it again. Oops. A quick trim suddenly turned into a desperate act of restoration & salvage.

I bet your hair is adorable that short. I bet it feels really good too.

I would be a fan of your mustache being twice as long, so that is a little more tragic...

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd like my moustache to be twice as long too, but it becomes extremely unwieldy. I don't know how you manage yours (but I'm glad you do).

It takes about three months. You have to commit to only trimming along your mouth until the hair at the top reaches all the way down. Until then it tends to be unruly, but once it is all long, then it seems to behave a lot better. I don't do much to mine but run my brush through it when I remember in the mornings. I personally thing it tends to be kind of messy (the grey is a different texture than the brown so it is a little fly-away) but Chip's has a texture similar to mine and he always looks adorable, so I try to just let go of worring about it. Anyway, once you get that base of three months of growth, you will be surprise how much is there. Your upper lip is about the same height as mine, so you should be able to support a similar size mustache, (though your hair is nice and straight so the texture will probably be really pretty like Ron's.)

What a sweet, sweet thing to say! I will accept *adorable* as a substitute for "well-groomed," since the latter will probably never happen without a major trim (um, like the impulsive one I just did a couple of days ago ... well, like everyone's saying here, "it'll grow back").

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
As you say, the grey & brown have different textures, although the ratio is heavily in the grey column now so that's becoming less of an issue for me.

The really ugly period is first thing in the morning: Thanks to smearing my face into a pillow all night, the moustache & beard are usually in truly scary configuration which doens't always behave even after a shower and combing.

Oh, the hardships of being a male primate! (Good thing it's worth it.)

A *long* luxurious shower (giving it more time to moisturize) sometimes helps, especially if you use some conditioner.

But I think I need to verify your description of the problem sometime under the described conditions ... *licking lips*

So if I see a dancer with a paper bag over his head, and the words "BAD HAIRCUT! DON'T LOOK AT ME!" scrawled on the bag ... I know it'll be you, right?

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the haircut is OK and it will be back to my preferred length in time for the convention. I don't think I'll ever rest easy around that particular barber again, knowing that he could leap out of nowhere to attempt attacking my moustache again.

[identity profile] bearfuz.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I *never* let barbers touch my moustache. I'm very surprised he started on it without asking you! That would *so* make me not want to go back there.

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I would have declined if he had asked.

Would burning his house down be an appropriate response or a little overly dramatic? What would Miss Manners suggest for such a situation? :-)

[identity profile] bearfuz.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, tit for tat would suggest not burning it down, but rather redecorating it just a little on the outside, say repainting it turquoise or applying papier-maché (e.g. toilet paper) all over.

Of course Miss Manners would probably disapprove of even that. Yes, I wonder just what she would suggest. ;-)

hmmm .... how to put this politely....

[identity profile] trawnapanda.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, the haircut is OK

um... no, it isn't.

It will, as you say, grow out, and therein lies hope, I spoze.

I have a plaque over my computer that reads: "You can't control everything - Your hair was put on your head to remind you of that".

I had a self-inflicted problem recently, trying to get the sides of my moustache even - I ended up with a Hitlerian min-stache! It grew back.

I think the photo you posted later looks just fine!

[identity profile] bjarvis.livejournal.com 2006-06-18 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of a bumper sticker from years ago which said, in essence, "Cats exist to remind us of our place in the hierarchy of life."

I think the photo you posted later looks just fine!

Thank you! I'll deliver the payment in person the agreed drop-off point at the convention in two weeks. :-)

I don't really need a haircut at the moment

well, you didn't need THAT haircut.
