Duh.

DC and Maryland have dumb drivers. Yeah, there's news. :-^

According to GMAC Insurance, they rank 50 and 46 out of 51.

New Mexico is 43. I'm surprised it's that high :P

I was surprised Virginia ranked so high, at least compared to Maryland & DC.

Back in the stone age (1983) when I moved to DC I had to take the DC driver test. I recall being extremely surprised that the exam consisted of 25 out of the 50 sample questions in the test preparation booklet. Identical questions, identical multiple choice answers in the identical order. Kinda hard not to pass that one. For the sake of current residents, I hope that isn't the case any more.

I wonder how many failures to pass the driving test in DC are related to an inability to read English at a grade 2 level or higher by supposed native English speakers... As you say, the basic test is really to pass.

In Florida in 1981 the driver's test for new residents (and possibly new drivers, I am not sure) was identifying 20 different road signs by shape and color, i.e. red octagon means...

It was multiple choice, by the way.

I think my favorite question was "At a stop sign, you:"

I can't remember all of the choices, but the one that stuck with me was:

"Honk your horn and drive through."

Scary that you were actually allowed to answer the question that way and still get a license, but I think you were allowed something like 5 wrong answers.
