A Minor Anniversary

Two days ago, I had a small anniversary: it was one year since I attended my graduation ceremony upon completion of my MSc at the University of Maryland.

As expected, having the degree hasn't made any significant difference in my work or personal life. The biggest gain is simply getting a huge chunk of my spare time back instead of channeling my resources into reading, research & writing.

So why do I care about the anniversary? My employer covered a significant portion of the tuition fees and book expenses, forgivable over 12 months following graduation. As of this past Sunday, I'm no longer an indentured servant to my employer: I can seek employment elsewhere without having to worry about paying back the tuition.

Ahhhhh...

Congratulations on a job well done... and your persistence. I don't think I could go back to college if I had to. It must feel good that you have stuck to your bargain, and now are free to go, to stay, whatever YOU want to do.

Thanks! It hasn't been a big deal waiting for the one year anniversary since I haven't been actively seeking employment elsewhere, but it's nice to know that particular obstacle is now a non-issue. When the time is right, I now have a little extra flexibility.
