Almost Butch
We had snow around DC last night. Not a lot, only an inch or two with some sleet mixed in. Hardly anything to write about but it has finally put me into something of a holiday spirit. Well, only a little, but that's probably the most anyone can expect from me, holiday curmudgeon that I am.
Fortunately for my blood pressure, I didn't have to drive to work today as I had previously booked today as a vacation day. Unfortunately, I had a number of must-do errands which has eaten heavily into my lazy time.
My first appointment was a follow-up with my optometrist to confirm that my new contact lenses are working well for me. The samplers I've been wearing since Monday are indeed doing well so the order for a year's supply was officially submitted. That takes care of $360 out of my use-it-or-lose-it medical savings account. A pleasant surprise: Accuvue is offering a $30 rebate so I'll be sure to get the forms in the mail this afternoon.
From there, I drove directly to NTB to have the rear tires of my Civic replaced. The front tires are OK: they're about a year old. The rear tires are the originals and while they are not quite bald, they're close enough. The hiring manager at this particular garage has the same taste in men as I do: there was a half-dozen auto bears visible from the waiting area. I may go back again just to ogle the employees.
Eye candy aside, $180 later, my car is back on the road, securely gripping its own lane.
The next stop was AutoTrak to get new windshield wiper blades for my Civic and Kent's Caravan (yeah, Kent drives a minivan... he's actually a soccer mom in disguise). My blades were $4 each; his were $20 each. Ouch! In a fit of butchness, I replaced my own blades right there in the parking lot. Woo hoo.
The snow is melting so after I returned home, I shovelled out the slush from our sidewalk, driveway and front steps. It would all likely melt on its own in a couple of days but I'm fearful of it freezing into an unfortunate skating rink at night. I have an image of our mailman lying in a pool of blood at the bottom of our front steps. Our elderly east-side neighbours, Isaac & Goldie, had already cleared their sidewalks; I worry about Isaac having a heart attack while shovelling so I try to beat them to it whenever there's a snowfall but my already strained back was happy to be relieved of that duty this time around.
I'm going to go have a bowl of soup and see what's passes for daytime TV these days while my back recovers.
