Still no electricity
I've decided that evenings by candlelight aren't romantic unless it's intentional & voluntary. This is beginning to feel like a never-ending dinner date gone bad.
Despite assurances from Pepco that our power would be restored soon, it hasn't happened yet. Our block is still quite dark. Our utility's web site has a map of their coverage area coloured to indicate the extend of the black-outs and system outages, as well as the approximate location of work crews; while this morning's map is showing a lot more white areas (fully restored) than yesterday afternoon and our own zip code has advanced by two shades, I still have no idea when service will be restored.
I used the power inverter connected to the minivan via the garage to get the DSL modem and router functioning yesterday afternoon but the Linux box draws too much juice: I need a 400W inverter (at least) to get that beast functioning. The 250W inverter was sufficient however to run the iMac. If I thought the power would be out for days yet (and I had a lit workspace), I'd install Linux on one of the spare laptops: performance would severely suck but it would work at least long enough to clear the backlog of e-mail without overloading the inverter. Pity I didn't think of that Wednesday night.
Alternatively, I should get my hands on a solid pure-sine inverter some time in the next while. I was bidding for one on eBay a month ago to use for square dance calling but the bidding went out of my range.
We're heading to the trailer for the weekend soon. I'm at the office currently, recharging various electronic toys and prepping for a meeting at 10 AM while Kent is at home, packing food and his clothes. With a little luck, perhaps the power will be restored before he leaves home but I'm not holding my breath. If it isn't back by Sunday evening, I'm going to have a few very angry words with our utility.
