Emissions Tested

Not mine, the car's.

Maryland requires vehicles to have emissions checked every two years. This particular test was only to check the gas cap for a proper seal and to check the car's on-board diagnostics. There was no treadmill test or actual testing off emissions from the tailpipe; I'm not sure if my car isn't due for a more thorough check or if they're simply relying on the car's sensors to confirm there isn't an issue.

In any case, my humble 2001 Civic passed the tests required and is good until 2010.

Every 2 years? It's annual here in NC. That includes actually testing the emissions from the tailpipe. The fine for not doing it now up to $250.

I'd put the certificate up on the fridge for all to see except that it's supposed to stay with the vehicle (and my car doesn't fit on the fridge).

I'm not sure I want to imagine the testing probe, er, device for that.

copy the certificate, put it one of those cutesoid frames, with this wee picture of your car

off to one side, put it on the fridge door, and be Very Proud.

then next year, when the Maryland DOT tests YOUR tailpipe emissions, using a similar cutesoid frame, you can photocopy your certificate, and maybe you can sit bare-bottom on the office photocopier and put THAT image in the wee picture off to one side of the certificate...

Washington requires actual testing every 2 years, yes, that's the tailpipe probe, treadmill and gas cap etc, however the first 2-3 or so years of a car's life it doesn't need it, then it gradually whittles down to every 2 years after that. I don't know if this applies up to a certain year anymore or not but most cars made prior to 1974 don't require testing since they didn't have emissions equipment at all, at least that was the case at one time.

My truck passed it's emissions just fine when I got it in 2006 (at the time it was 14 years old or so and had 189K miles on it) and all of my cars have passed the emissions tests except the 83 Civic which had the annoying habit of going out of spec if you let it idle too long or didn't get it fully warmed up and could not get it right into a testing bay immediately upon arrival and if you could get right in and such it would pass just fine.
