Swimming Against the Current

As expected, this has been a rather heavy week at the office and after-hours.

While my on-call pager has been relatively quiet --blessings to Allah, the baby Jesus or the Lord Gawd Margaret or whomever-- I've had higher than normal levels of other on-call associated tasks. Fortunately, I've been able to keep up.

I've done more hardware cutovers and operating systems in the past three business days than in the prior three months. I have another tomorrow and four next week so I can safely say I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I do consider myself lucky that all have been smooth and uneventful thus far.

The last of our memory improvement classes with [livejournal.com profile] caller_dayle was Monday night. For the most part, we were implementing previously-learned fundamentals to cover other special cases such as directions, instructions, narratives, etc.. It's been fun but I'm glad to get my Mondays back for other projects.

A tonne of other people & tasks having been gnawing away at my available time lately. While I've said no frequently, a few people have chosen to ignore that; I'm going to have to be much more forceful, or be more specific (eg. I'm not available for anything until May, 2009). So many projects, so little time and resources to go around, and it's cutting into my LJ writing time.

I kinda wish I wasn't going to C1 tonight but we have just enough for a square if I do. Besides, I had already said I would so backing out isn't really an option without a phenomenally good reason. I'll probably feel better afterwards anyway... I usually do.

My Car, Disabled

About two weeks ago, my windshield was wacked with a flying rock while I was scooting around I495 to work. I didn't think much of it at the moment, but later that day I got a good look at the ding and the spreading cracks. [livejournal.com profile] kent4str urged me to get the windshield replaced before winter freeze/thaw cycles made it worse.

I called our insurance company who hooked me up with a glass replacement firm who does house calls. The appointment time came & went with no replacement in sight. Apparently, there was some sort of data entry error which prevented the call from being dispatched. Yeah, whatever.

My schedule was a nightmare last week so I didn't get a chance to reschedule until Friday. That appointment was this afternoon. [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr, because he loves me so, cancelled his afternoon plans so he could be here for the replacement work.

The replacement guys came & went: apparently, the windshield they brought wasn't the right type for my car. Yeah, right. They'll be back tomorrow and are waiving the $100 deductible for [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr's troubles.

Here's what my car currently looks like (sigh):

I Weep for the Future

Last Saturday, DC Lambda Squares had a dance at a local middle school. On the wall, lovingly crafted by some teacher, was the following:
