Deer Infestation

Some homeowners have problems with mice. Some have rats. Some have cockroaches or termites.

We have deer.

Deer Deer

Silver Spring, MD, 2006-08-16

I photographed Bambi and his brother on our neighbour's front lawn about 7 PM last Wednesday evening. They were apparently attracted by the apples falling from the tree; they also love our fig trees. Bold little beasts.

Bold little beasts.

You're telling me!! I hit one yesterday driving I-95 in south Richmond. It tried to cross 8 lanes of traffic. I clipped the back legs as it tried to jump the median.

Fur. This deer wasn't so little.

There seems to be an overabundance of deer currently. On our drive home yesterday from West Virginia, we nearly passed --or nearly hit-- one box turtle, two squirrels, and three separate pairs of does & fawns. We see a herd of a dozen deer in the NIST grounds more often than not when we drive past on southbound I270. It's pretty common to see them nibbling on tulips in neighbours' gardens on the drive to work these days. I feel a Far Side cartoon coming on...

Our friend Janet in Gaithersburg HATES them. She has a garden and has tried just about everything to keep them out.

Oh I love them! In San Jose I lived on the edge of a public park where there were deer. I'd often wake up to find one on the front lawn. Now I live in a desert, so we have one of the alternatives you listed... radioactive cockroaches. Ah well.
