Life Chugs Along

Nothing much to report really... life has been relatively calm as I'm in the space between our Ohio trip last weekend and the Delaware trip this coming weekend.

I was handed a tonne of additional documentation to assemble, write, edit & publish on Monday, or so it seemed. On Tuesday, I went through my notes, looked at the fragmented materials on hand and interviewed some people who would be offering input into the project: it's not going to be as bad as I thought. There is still work to be done and I have relatively few workdays available in May to do the work, but I'm currently feeling much more relaxed about my deadlines than I did 24 hours ago.

We were planning to have a birthday dinner Tuesday in honour of a friend who celebrated a birthday yesterday, but our friend's schedule is overloaded and we got an emergency call from Dayle asking us to call Baltimore's club night. We'll have that celebratory dinner some other time. Like November. This last minute rescheduling also meant I missed the live coverage of the Canadian federal budget. sigh

Last night's club night was one of our smoothest so far. I think we're getting the hang of it. :-) With the Chesapeake Squares' fly-in "Pass The Ocean, Hon" coming up this weekend, we had a relatively large turnout. A handful were simply toiling in the back on last minute event coordination while many others we haven't seen in a while were clearly working on getting themselves back up to speed on certain calls.

[livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I will both be calling during the GCA blocks at the upcoming fly-in so I was happy to have the opportunity to test drive some new A2 material. Well, not exactly new... most of it I had used in the prior club night and a few figures --to put it mildly-- bombed. Based on last night's efforts, it appears my retooling of those figures has helped immensely.

Tonight is reserved for grocery shopping and packing; I hope to be on the road to Rehoboth, DE, in the mid-morning tomorrow.

Will be on the lookout for your GCA tips in Rehoboth!

Goddess only knows when I (and/or John) will get to dance to your ever-more-adept calling. I certainly am looking forward to it, whenever it happens!

LJ is infiltrated by square dancers!

As for the budget, I read the summary on CBC. Sounded good, but the Liberal budget critic said that the Tories were not planning for the future. They took a $9B surplus and turned it into something far, far less. I was looking for the figure but can't find it now, it was somehwere close to a few hundred million. However, if the best thing the Liberals can say is that the Tories raised taxes on the poor, instead of commenting on what good there may be, they're not working hard enough to improve their image.

The Conservatives --I refuse to call them Tories since they have nothing at all in common with the old Progressive-Conservative Party-- accelerated some tax breaks the Liberals had introduced and lowered the GST by 1% (another 1% drop is scheduled for a couple of years out).

They also scrapped the federal day care program in favour of a $90/month subsidy directly to parents; where they propose parents can find a $90/month day care slot is beyond me.

They also have effectively anulled the Kyoto Accord. While they haven't backed out entirely --that's too radical if they want to get re-elected-- they cancelled almost all funding of its implementation and have promised an ill-defined made-in-Canada equivalent. That's typical parliament-speak for "bury it and forget it."

They also unilaterally cancelled a $5.1 billion agreement with native groups to alleviate third world health & living conditions across the country.

The income level which triggers federal income tax has been raised, dropping another portion of the population off income taxes. I haven't heard any details about modifications to transfer payments to the provinces yet. The budget overall does stay in the black but only barely. The debt-to-GDP ratio should be close to 31% by the end of the 2006-7 fiscal year, down from an all-time high of around 78% about 8-9 years ago.

Damnit Jim I'm a sys admin, not a square dancer!

OTOH, having been to a couple of practices, it was fun to watch. I like to watch. Sometimes I enjoy just "being there."

Extra points to anyone who picks up on the references here. :)

Well, since my name isn't Jim, I'd have to go with Mr. Spock.
SYSOP's usually make good sq dancers though.

I refer to Mr Harper's party as "Stephen and the Harpies"
