I was calling for the Zig Zaggers tonight, a northern Virginia A2 square dance club. I've had prior gigs with them both as a dancer and as a caller; they'd best be described as light A2 rather than the more cerebral A2 of, say, the Phantom 8s, a neighbouring club.

Typically, we have a square of dancers with a few spares. Tonight, we had two full squares with a few extra dancers, a record turn-out for my gigs with them. (At the risk of being tacky, I would mention that since the caller is paid by the door proceeds, a higher turn-out translates into a larger calling fee. No one will ever get rich as a square dance caller but the extra bonus once in a while is a nice pat on the back.)

The first two tips weren't the greatest. The dancers clearly needed some warm-up time and it didn't help that I was using written material and therefore had to split my attention between the floor and my notes. Not good for any of us. From the third tip onwards, however, I switched to exclusively sight-calling & resolving, putting away my prepared material.

And it worked. In fact, it worked really well: never having to take my eyes off the floor meant I could spot problems instantly. Not being tied to written material meant I could instantly adjust the pace & difficulty of the sequence. I do this for Mainstream and Plus but I've always been hesitant to attempt exclusively sight-calling an Advanced floor, largely because I have so few opportunities to practice.

I did have a couple of crutches, admittedly. I kept a list of the A1 and A2 calls on my table so if I felt I was being too repetitious, I would randomly drop my finger on the list to select a feature call or two for the next figure. I also had a prepared sheet of clever get-outs if I could see a zero box or a zero line coming up with a call or two so I could offer a periodic "ah ha!" moment to the dancers.

In all, I had a good time and I think the dancers did too.

And [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr and [livejournal.com profile] kent4str brought a cake for a small birthday celebration in my honour. I have no idea where in the car it was hidden or how they snuck it past me, but there it was, bless 'em both.

Tomorrow is the Mike Jacobs memorial service, dance and dinner. It will be an all-day affair for us as we're bringing sound equipment, will be helping with set-up and are assisting the DC Lambda Squares with refreshments. More news later.

I called Advanced for the Zig Zaggers in Vienna, VA, tonight. We didn't quite have two squares but we managed well enough. I think I was in pretty good form and while the floor stumbled on a couple of calls, I think we all had a fun time.

Next up: Monday, when [livejournal.com profile] kent4str subs for [livejournal.com profile] justetthon's Ettseteras and I teach Plus for the DC Lambda Squares while [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr attends John Marshall's C2 class. [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I will arm-wrestle for who gets to call for the Chesapeake Squares on Tuesday.

The caller scheduler for the Zig Zaggers dance club mentioned casually to me the other day that she's working on her 2009/2010 dance season schedule. I like that kind of advanced planning! Go Donna!

I'm supposed to call an A2 dance for the Zig Zaggers in Vienna, VA, tonight but so far we have only eight people confirmed to attend, including me. [livejournal.com profile] kent4str may not be attending either thanks to a stomach bug so we're a couple short of even a single square.

One of the comments in the declined list indicated she would be attending some state festival so it looks like we have a schedule conflict. A lot of the DCLS regulars have mentioned various prior commitments. Still, there are still 16 people who haven't declared their intention one way or another so there's still hope.

In any case, I'll be at the hall and set up until at least 8:45 PM or so, just in case enough bodies come through the door.

The calendar is filling up in interesting ways...

We have a planning meeting for our Harvest Festival Hoedown this coming Thursday.

I'm calling for the Zig Zaggers (Advanced) in Vienna, VA, this coming Friday and for the DC Lambda Squares (Mainstream) on Monday in downtown DC. This likely means [livejournal.com profile] kent4str will take next Tuesday in Baltimore while I take DCLS on Thursday in DC, but we'll arm-wrestle for that later.

The Zig Zaggers are trying to line up their callers for the 2008/9 season currently so [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I were comparing calendars last night. Pending confirmation by the club, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str has signed up for four dances (Sept 19, Dec 5, Feb 20, June 5) while I've signed up for three (Nov 21, Jan 30, May 15).

I've been confirmed for a one hour Gay Callers Association showcase slot at the upcoming Cleveland convention! I'll be on at 9 AM on Saturday... it may not be pretty that ungodly hour of the morning, presuming anyone besides me shows up.

I'm making a presentation on behalf of the GCA to the IAGSDC delegates, no longer than 10 minutes, at approximately 4:15 PM on Thursday, July 3, at the Cleveland convention. I was planning to be there anyway in support of the 2009 convention update report (2:50 PM) so it's no big deal. Normally, the report would be made by the current GCA's rep to the IAGSDC but sadly [livejournal.com profile] rlegters (and [livejournal.com profile] tdjohnsn) won't be at this year's convention. :-( ([livejournal.com profile] otterpop58 is reporting on the CALLERLAB convention at the same meeting, 4:05 PM!)

Our GCA prez has asked me to run for the board at our general meeting at the Cleveland convention. While I haven't committed to that yet, I can't think of a good reason why I shouldn't; the only possible hitch is that as registrar for the 2009 convention, my schedule may be rather tight next April. Then again, there's no reason I can't delegate various tasks for the few times I'll have must-attend meetings.

And finally, it's nearly certain I'll be heading to Canada in July to attend the CALLERLAB mini-convention in London, Ontario, as well as visiting with family in the vicinity. I still have to check air fares to see if I can really afford this, but the odds are good.

The Zig Zaggers were going to be dancing A2 to [livejournal.com profile] kent4str tonight but I just received a telephone call 15 minutes ago from the caller booker indicating that the space was double-booked: there's an elementary school play in progress in the space we were going to use! Bummer!

The coordinator and I split up the dancer list between us; I've telephoned the people on my list and sent a cancellation notice through eVite. I had to leave answering machine messages for three people though: I hope we've caught everyone in time!

So far this week, I've survived co-teaching our Monday evening Plus class, calling at Baltimore's Tuesday club night and dancing at Wednesday night's C1 event.

I still have to call Mainstream & Plus at DC's club night tonight, dance to [livejournal.com profile] kent4str's A2 in Vienna, VA, Friday night and co-facilitate a caller workshop at our place on Sunday for two newbie callers.

Last night's C1 was fun and vastly better than our last session. Doren had some interesting twists to throw at us and a conversation during the break yielded a cute choreographic idea: imagine parallel inverted lines with the ends looking in; call 'stretch step & fold' to end a trade-by position. I'll play with setting up a tip to exploit this and variations for my next C1 gig (April 30).

[livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr is off to New York state for Ken Ritucci's weekend C1 boot camp... pray for him (and the other dancers)!
